Massmart appoints Mohammed Abdool-Samad as finance chief
He replaces Johannes (Hans) van Lierop from August 1.
Massmart, the Walmart-owned retailer that operates Game and Makro stores, announced on Tuesday that it has appointed Mohammed Abdool-Samad (pictured) as its finance chief with effect from August 1, 2019.
Mohammed succeeds Johannes (Hans) van Lierop. Massmart said Johannes indicated in February 2019 that “he was not available to extend his tenure with Massmart for personal reasons.”
Johannes decided to step down as CFO and executive director at the end of July 2019 but will remain at Massmart until later in the year. He will assume an advisory capacity to support Mohammed through a handover period.
Mohammed joins Massmart from Illovo Sugar Limited, where he was group finance director. Prior to joining Illovo in 2011, Mohammed spent a decade in various executive finance roles within Anglo American.
He is a qualified chartered accountant of South Africa (CA (SA)) and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
